searching for Keats quote

Postby robertwfuller » Sat Dec 23, 2006 7:02 pm

I heard a guest on NPR quote Keats as follows:
"Make voyages. Attempt them. There's nothing else."
Can anyone provide the citation for this quote -- or something like it -- from Keats's work?

I have absolutely *never* read that quote in anything I have that pertains to Keats. . .but maybe I just missed it. Hmm. . .maybe it's time to look through the 'ol letters and poems once again :)

Never heard that either.

Are you sure it's Keats?

I heard some fairly famous person quote it on NPR, and attribute it to Keats about a year ago, but otherwise have no reason to believe that Keats ever said or wrote it. But Keats was a voyager, so maybe, somewhere, ... If I can't confirm it, I won't use it; but if it can be confirmed, it would make a good epigram to a quest novel.

There's a hell of a lot of letters from Keats and I haven't read the complete letters so it may be in some obscure letter.

It's certainly not from the poems.

Actually, the quote is from Tennessee Williams' Camino Real. :)

Yes, indeed, and thanks very much. I found the quote--"Make voyages! Attempt them... there's nothing else."--among a set of quotations by Tennessee Williams. No reference was given, but now I can get "Camino Real" and pinpoint the reference.
