Bingo, Brokenlyre, the prize is yours!! Hyperion it is; however, I'm not sure which book. Might be the end of Book II or the beginning of Book III. I do know it's before the deification of Apollo and the "Knowledge enormous makes a god of me" monologue, which is, as you know, at the conclusion of Book III.
