Avatars

What do you like and dislike about this site? How could we improve it?

Folks, I surrender.

And if I may offer a humble suggestion: maybe we ought to apply some tactful moderation to our choice of avatars. They are, after all, one of the first things people browsing the forum will see when they enter. First impressions, you know.
Let's not ruin the experience for others by turning this into our private playground for venting our silliness (bear in mind that Thilo reservs the right to disable the avatar function if members start abusing it).

Anyway, enough with the seriousness - what do you think of my new avatar? (and I'll keep this one no matter what you say...) It is from a painting called "Selene and Endymion", but for the life of me I have not been able to find out who the artist is. Anybody knows who painted it?

I thought it was Endymion and Diana

Selene and Diana... Endymion sure gets around.

OK, seriously. . .

I can't get my stupid avatar to work! I spent ages whittling various images down to the miniscule file size, and still none of them work! Yar :(

Any suggestions?

I've had the exact same experience, Credo Buffa. I don't have a problem making avitars the right size for livejournal--but here, nothing seems to work. :( Of course, I don't have a lot of computer expertise--so any advice would be helpful.

Well, LJ icons can be quite a bit bigger, which helps a lot. . .

I don't know, might just be a bug in the system.

Did you use the linking or the upload option? Linking (i.e. have the avatar available somewhere else on the web, and provide a url to it) seems to work the best for most of us here.

I've tried both. Neither has been too kind to me.

I should slightly revise my "problem" statement: I've gotten to the stage where it says it's uploaded something, but whatever it is isn't an image, because nothing shows up in the avatar space.
