What is there to understand? It is just a story.

Porphyro tricks his way into Madeline's bedroom as she is enchanted by St Agnes magic dreams. He tries to turn the dream into reality but is not as good as the dream Porphyro. Somehow (probably sex) he melts into her dream and they escape together. At the end of the poem we are suddenly reminded that they are all dead and have been for centuries. The final question is who made the best of the fleeting life they had, the lovers or the Beadsman that spent his life praying. They are all equally dead!

It is a poem questioning the relationship between dreams and what we call reality.

Read the story and see what you think.
The tygers of wrath are wiser than the horses of instruction.
