This is remarkable. I wonder - Does Britain have just too many great literary figures preventing them from honoring them all? Is that the reason why Doyle's place is in ruins?

Yes, that is a shame, but why it's allowed to happen I have no idea.
It's not as though he has drifted into obscurity! There is a new series
of Sherlock Holmes on TV set in the modern day, I thought it was good,
has anyone seen it? I have visited his grave, it's in a village in the New Forest,
beautiful place.

I was very wary of the 'new' Sherlock series, having grown up with the supreme Jeremy Brett interpretation, but I was pleasantly delighted by the new take on it. It is very true to the characters and the spirit of the original stories, which the best adaptations should aspire to.
Such a shame about Doyle's house, but I suppose there are so many literary properties and places that could be saved and preserved for the future but the government never have money for it, though there's always plenty of cash for bombs and bullets to batter the cities of foreign countries with.

Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes for me, no-one else really comes close, maybe Peter Cushing in the old Hammer adaptations comes near Brett.

Yes, Broken Lyre, IMO, the UK has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the Great Writers' department. (And maybe that's why so few Brits & Canadians are Keats fans.)
And to my mind, Jeremy Brett is *the* definitive Sherlock Holmes, although I loved the old Basil Rathbone movies, too.

I thoroughly enjoyed the recent BBC interpretation of the Holmes persona. I liked the actor's take on Holmes as a quirky, socially inept genius. (Benedict Cumberbatch -- I love his last name!) I liked that it was set in the contemporary world -- much as the Basil Rathbone movies were set in the 1940s when those flicks were made.

I was disappointed with the recent movie, even though I feel that Robert Downey, Jr. is a very competent actor. The whole movie just fell flat on its face.

But, yeah. Jeremy Brett will always be Sherlock Holmes to me.
