Real 1900 footage of people going about their lives!

This is just so poignant, fascinating. It gives me shivers..especially the bit at the beginning of the man walking down the street- makes me feel I am there..I wonder who was he?..where was he going?....amazing....

And the music is beautiful and melancholy..and by a living British composer!!! But sounds from another time- fits the footage perfectly.

John....you did not live to see-
who we are because of what you left,
what it is we are in what we make of you.

Sound interesting, but link doesn't work?

Thanks Raphael! Truly fascinating.

A lot of the folk caught in the shots seem to be aware they are being filmed, which made me wonder what the filming device must have looked like - it must have been an unwieldy thing.

To think that Virginia Woolf was alive when that footage was taken! Great to imagine how it would have been for her, roaming the streets, seeing the men in their bowler hats and with their long umbrellas and the women in their puffed-out dresses covering almost every inch of skin.

Yes it would have been a big camera! Quite a few famous writers were about in 1900- this clip gives one a feel of the era doesn't it?

Now all we need is footage of Hampstead in the late 1810s  .

Huh I was thinking of that myself Cath! Imagine if we had seen a photo or footage of the Keats Circle!
