Orwell plaque in Hampstead defaced

Around the corner from Keats's House in Hamsptead, there is a commemorative plaque for George Orwell on the corner of South End Street and Pond Street in Hampstead. Orwell lived and worked in 1934-1935 at the site, which is now a French bakery. However, the frieze image of Orwell on the plaque has mysteriously disappeared:

It is not clear whether this theft is new or dates back to 2010:
