Who do you think will be cast in the Paradise Lost movie?

Postby darthoutis » Sun Dec 03, 2006 11:33 pm

I should be editing my writing sample for grad school but I'm loitering on this forum instead...

I've read your thread on how you think the movie will be received but I'd also like to know who you think will be cast in the Paradise Lost movie. So let me here your speculation (or intelligence, if you're an insider).

These are the rumors I've heard so far on the Milton listserv (some of these are redundant):

Johnny Depp as Satan
I can't see Johnny Depp delivering epic monologues with the same bombasity that Satan does. He's too shady. To perform Satan right would require an actor with more experience in oration (especially voice projection; I can never understand a damn thing he says), I think. I'd rather see Peter O'Toole do it, if he were younger (he could do Satan for Paradise Regain'd at his age, though).

If Satan were portrayed as a Byronic hero, however, then I think Johnny Depp would play an excellent Satan. But since I'm convinced that Satan is not the prototype Byronic hero but a classical hero, that wouldn't work for me, either.

James Earl Jones as God the Father
Actually, I think this would be a very good decision. His voice is resonant enough for the part and he has a serious enough demeanor.

Brad Pitt as the Son
Wasn't he bad enough as Achilles?

Keanu Reeves as the Son
*shudder*

and my favorite of them all...

HARRISON FORD as God the Father!
What though the field be lost?
All is not lost; the unconquerable Will,
And study of revenge, immortal hate,
And courage never to submit or yield:
And what is else not to be overcome?

Some laughable suggestions.

Here's my two-penneth-worth:

Anthony Hopkins has the gravitas and the ability to portray God the father.

Either him, or Christopher Plummer.

As Satan I would have Rufus Sewell.

If you are unfamiliar with him, see here:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001722/

He has a particularly sweet but malevolent sounding raspy, forceful voice.

As the son...hmm I think this should be definitely an unknown.

The same goes for Eve and Adam - they should have an anonymous everyman/everywoman quality.

They should not under ANY circumstances be Hollywood stars

No he's a great actor, but he's not exactly A-list Hollywoood fare.

He could maybe be the Angel Gabriel.

Now I've just had another thought...

Gabriel Byrne could be Satan!

Liam Nesson as God!

It'll be an all Irish production made in Rathmines!

It might as well be set on craggy island

And the theme tune saturn "my lovely horse" will be seranaded throughout the film.

We always seem to bring an irish feel to everything dont we,also throw in a couple of langers and its sure to be a hit

Johnny Depp--Satan

Jude Law--God

James McAvoy--Gabriel

James McAvoy--all other characters

I'll be revenged on the whole pack of you!

(P.S. I still don't understand how to correctly incorporate attributions into quotes. Could someone explain this to me?)

EDIT: Nevermind. I figured it out on my own.
