Sandpit

Sometimes you just
Really have to humour
Madmen, and fools,
As like little boys
Their notions of
Scale, proportion
Don't measure up
To sensible facts.

Two small boys
In a hole digging
To reach to Oz:
My brother and
Wee Daniel next
Door, engaged
As apprentice
Miners in 'pit
Not even big
Enough to be
A bunker on
A golf course.

They'd found;
Half-way up
Our back hill,
A sandpit so
Big their once
Modest aims
Were turned
Into notions
Above, way
Beyond what
Two wee lads
Could begin
To dream of.

We laughed,
Hard not to;
Boys will be
Boys they say:
I suppose so,
But grown up
Men with the
Capacity at
Least to try
And fathom
The depths
The sandpit
Needs are
Still digging
A grave fit
For us all
With no
More wit
Than a
Boy.
