Carthago delenda

Sands upturned, bows sunk,
An empire in ruins, fired
For nothing; a hatred of
Intravenous, toxic, cruelty.
Scipio, lesser son, shame
At such rifling of graves:
Running family reputation
Through the open bowels
With a rusty blunt blade.
What glory in the tears
Of women and blood of
Wretched old men who,
Toothless, can't cry out
The fate of their sons
And daughters mired in
Refuse? Alive, and dead,
The struggling and prone,
Like the eagle and serpent,
Involved, and entombed
In the filth and the fire.
Cato, badgering, baiting
With figs in his robe, he,
Even he would have wept
To see that abandoned
Commander's wife slay
Her own brood and leap
With curses into the pyre.
Pity is a god no conqueror
Has use of; Glory, and
Spoils trump compassion
And Profit, his henchman
Prospect grow fat and
Their beady eyes shine,
At a whole nation's sorrow.

"Carthage must be destroyed" Good work as ever Saturn.
I read that in February 1985 Rome and Carthage signed a peace treaty, a symbolic gesture
to the rest of the world, it only took 2,248 years!
Take care.
Marwood.
That I might drink, and leave the world unseen.

Thanks marwood, that's an interesting historical footnote, I never knew that.
