Foundered - A remembrance day poem

Foundered is a word where I come form to describe extreme cold, the kind that chills the bones, used as a superlative mostly but one that I like.

Foundered

Ashen faces, grim with grime
In soaked rags darkened dank
They trudged; so mud muddled,
Blood splashed and bullet blind.

We’re foundered the boys said,
A word for cold, desolate cold,
But not the homecoming kind
Of shutting doors and firelight;
The cold of the soul, of despair
Eating its way trenched in the
Very heart and rotting away.

We’ll never know that cold
A century ago, and our bones
Will burn quick or lie in peace,
Not foundered, or forgotten
Or blasted, shattered, sore
In the all dead man’s land.

War. And still it goes on. Lovely haunting and moving poem Saturn.
Hope you are well. I've taken up a new hobby, acoustic guitar. Been 'playing' about four months.
Fingertips are sore! You-tube is good for tips and how to play stuff. I like Irish music, waterboys songs. Been practicing 'she is so beautiful'. Take care.

Thanks a lot mar wood and good luck with the guitar playing I've been playing for over 20years eventually your fingertips will heal after a few weeks they'll be numb! Keep at it, like writing or anything worth doing it can be really rewarding when you just get the magic combination right and the muses give you a brief glance.

I know it's a lovely metaphor, and really enjoyed reading it (and feeling it) but speaking of cold....I live near Buffalo, New York.
And we have just come through the COLDEST FEBRUARY in over 145 years (since records began here!). It's also one of the snowiest - we have 3 feet all over the place, drifts over 8 feet and days below 0 degrees F. Just sayin'. Made me read your poem a few times. :)

Ha yeah I've been seeing some of the pictures and videos of the snow over there, he been frightening, we never get anything close to that over here; I don't know how I'd cope with that kind of cold myself!
