Orpheus in pieces

Inarticulate; strewn,
Dispersed: all that
Is left of me is a
Trail of bloody and
Marrowless bones
On a hillside: an
Uninterred grave.
A punishment for
Lack of restraint:
A vain lesson for
A coward heart.

Eurydice is gone;
Whipped in a flash
Back to that pall.
Her new-adjusted
Eyes had just only
Begun to uncloud
And receive the
Sunny warmth of
New life's promise.

A glance burned
And Hades' blaze
Set in motion the
Machinations, the
Hellish command
Of the dark lord
In caverns deep.

No more songs
No more sighs
No more tears
No more sleep
No more cries
No more love.

Orpheus lies torn
In pieces around
The wreck of his
Hopes; his wife
Bound below by
A shattered oath.

Impatient, man
In error, in lust,
In heat, in light
Cannot hold sure
A promise made
In the dark or
Even in bright
Day. Stumbling
We are cursed
By our own folly
And see our lives
Recede to gloom
And are scattered
Far to the winds.
