A long goodbye

A long goodbye

Every word you speak now
Seems like a long goodbye,
A silent farewell, another
Of those countless nails,
Another dull thud of steel
Driven into the open casket
Of all my hopes and dreams.

You look only to the future
And dismiss all that's past;
Present seems irrelevant,
Unimportant in your heart.
I can't live in the future, can't
Mortgage today for tomorrow;
I live in the here and now
And can only exist today,
Count the live-long days
As you plough all furrows
For futurity's bright promise.

Have I become a burden,
An irksome gadfly, buzzing
For unwarranted attention?
Am I become an appendix
A useless limb to be cut
Away when surplus found?

Is there not an inch of space
Left to house my houseless,
Rain-soaked head in that
Dark abode, mysterious heart?

Is the happiness you've found
So watertight, so compact
It will admit no ingress
For nourishment of the soul?

Will you let your beauty fade,
Your heart shrivel and die
All for the hope of worldly
And necessary things.
Will you push away love,
Hurt, fear, desire and joy
All to prove a stupid point?

Give me your hand, look
Me straight in my eyes
And tell me you want
Nothing from me more;
Give me some peace
So I may die at last.

This poem is so moving, there is a heaviness on my heart from reading it. It's really sad, I felt something from the beginning of to the end of.

Tragically moving, I feel a sadness from it that my heart can't relate to.
