Coming avalanche

Coming avalanche

I live now in the shadow,
With the looming shade
Of an avalanche poised
Right above my head.
I already swallow dust,
I choke with anticipation,
In dread I squint my eyes
Waiting for it all to fall,
For everything to collapse
And bury my worthless
And empty life forever.

I'm trapped, rooted,
Planted here in fear,
Unable to descend
Or abseil to safety:
Nothing can drag
Me hence, nothing
Will stop me facing
Inevitable torrent.

I have no protection,
No safe, sure footing,
No pegs to hold me up:
The disaster will sweep
Me away forever more.

There's no reason
No line of hope
To hold this weight
Anymore, so I'll
Let go and fall.

I have no illusions,
No beliefs to anchor
Or suspend me up
Between the twin
Peaks of desire
And certain loss.

So I watch, wait
And my only wish
Is that the end
Will be swift,
And also

Total.

Devastatingly beautiful...albeit extremely painful...I love these lines:

...I have no illusions,
No beliefs to anchor
Or suspend me up
Between the twin
Peaks of desire
And certain loss.

So I watch, wait
And my only wish
Is that the end
Will be swift,
And also

Total.

This is so grave, but very well written in its continuing metaphor, Stephen. You just know how to capture in a single moment snapshot your mood or feelings at the very moment. There's nothing too panoramic about these lines...they're so pinpointed--the ache and desperation--I love this, Stephen.
