The University Poems

Postby Matt » Thu Nov 18, 2004 12:25 am

There has been of late, a renewed interest in my poetry collection which I called 'Just a Boy.' Unfortunately I have not been able to send people the collection as the collection is on my old computer at home. I, being at University am unable to get to the collection. As a substitute though I am going to start posting my new poems on here, so that you can read/enjoy/comment on/criticise the poems as you so wish. So here are the first two:

REFLECTION

I often wonder about people.
Particularly when I see them dull,
Walking along the pavement
Upright, back-straight, face forward,
And eyes facing toward some vital goal.
Its funny how their mouths
Look as though they are attached
At each end by some invisible string,
To their feet.
Their rhythmic, marching feet.
When I look upon these people
I see only grey.
Much like the monotonous concrete
That guides them.

Now, I’m no genius,
Nor am I further evolved
Than those who walk Metropolis style.
But at least when I’m going somewhere
I pick the apple-green leaves off the trees
That overhang the pavement.

BEDSHEETS

A few years ago I would always change my sheets
Before you came to my house,
My pubescent mind embarrassed
(but slightly amused)
At stains of all different kinds.
But now that you are away from me
And only here for short visits
I keep my sheets for you
To smell. So that you can inhale
The scent of me that I hope
You’ve missed.
Once you’ve left though,
I change those sheets the way I used to,
Frantically quick and desperate,
Because when I am not going to see you
For another ten days
The last thing I need are sharp, penetrating reminders.
The smells I love, of you
And everything you do.

Let me know what you think y'all

Love the poems Matt.

One question I asked the last time you posted Bedsheets - is "penetrating reminders" a deliberate pun or not??

Keep up the good work - wish I could write poetry still but I'm on a major, major downer at the moment and am probably one of those people who are

"...dull,
Walking along the pavement
Upright, back-straight, face forward,
And eyes facing toward some vital goal.
Its funny how their mouths
Look as though they are attached
At each end by some invisible string,
To their feet.
Their rhythmic, marching feet."

Coleridge says "When a Man is unhappy, he writes damned bad poetry I find".

Alas, how true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Oh what a misery it is to have an intellect in splints".
