My First Poem

Postby Wynn » Tue Apr 07, 2009 1:39 am

Hi, I'm a teenaged lad, new to this site. I've loved poetry ever since I first read a paragraph of Keats' in "On the Eve of St. Agnes." I haven't written much as of yet, but I intend to!
My first poem was inspired by a flush of anger that came over me when I heard Elizabeth Alexander read her inaugural poem "Praise Song For the Day." I thought it was speechy, preachy, and all too prose-like, and to add to that, she read it horribly: she made a poem with no flow even chunkier. I cried within myself, "Where is Adonaïs when we need him?" Here's what came after:

Pseudo Poet

World means world; know what is:
Beauty is truth; truth beauty.

We long for Adonaïs, thought don't know it,
Being cut short by the pseudo poet,
Him or she or it or they or them who translate
This our world: when will they abate?

O we long for Adonaïs, now's truly dead!
Though we have a worser malady:
"Praise Song for the Day" pseudo poet said,
What song? Adonaïs fun'ral melody?

World means world; know what is:
Beauty is truth; truth beauty.
"Never trust a poet who can't construct a stanza."

Well not quite, but I'm getting there, patience lad.

Naw, that's "All along the watchtower."

:P

Sorry to rape your fine poem, I couldn't help myself.. It's a love-in, you know.

And welcome to the club :)
