Cats

Cats are unfathomable.
No science has as yet
Bled dry their mystery,
Drained understanding
Of their dark fascination,
Their Etruscan smiles,
Their Pharonic poise,
Their enigmatic gait.
A fascination dwells
In their marbled eyes,
A distrust, a detached
Amusement at man.
We are not alone with
Our impatient search
For entertainment.

A neighbour's cat and I
Are engaged in a trial
Of many years now:
A kind of chess match,
No end-game in sight.
We catch each others'
Eyes like sharpshooters,
Target-locked in and
We aim like jousters
Shouldering their lance
At full tilt, galloping.
As the bull eyes up
Its extravagant foe,
He looks at me long
And I sense a deep
Remembrance of old
Occupations, fierce
Cousins, sleek stances,
Elegantly economic
Ravelling of its prey.

Perhaps it sees me too,
Sees in me a cat's sense
Memory of primitive man,
An old enemy of felinekind
Hidden under a thin veneer
Of modern respectability.
I mistake his motives, and
He is mistaken about mine,
Yet he it is that must flee
As if guilty of discernment.
I cannot tell. The stalemate,
The stand-off must remain
Yet one day I hope to finally
Uncover evidence of strategy.

As a cat lover, I must say I love this poem! It reminds me of Keats' poem to a cat. Can't remember the exact title though.
"Let me not wander in a barren dream,
But, when I am consumed in the fire,
Give me new Phoenix wings to fly at my desire."

Why thank you

Keats' is much superior [and funnier] as you can see:
