Extinction

Postby Saturn » Wed Apr 22, 2009 7:25 pm

As today is Earth Day, I wrote this little ditty:

Extinction

And if the sun should fail,
Will the Earth wrap up tight
In warm winter clothes?
Will flowers stretch wide
Their petals in despair?
Will dogs howl in fear,
Bears hide bristled heads
As the world falls to ruin?

Will the fish bow heads,
Grasp their fins in prayer?
Will oceans hide in streams,
And winds in empty caves?
Will rains, trembling, bury
Themselves in heavy clouds?
Will tall trees shed branches
And fall to their death in vain?

Can worms in their sodden home
Sense disaster pregnant in air?
Will molluscs cower at sea
When extinction hovers nigh?
Will mankind have the courage
That our knowledge affords,
When the wide eyes of nature
Look to us for redemption?

I really like this Saturn, lulls you with some quite sweet images, then a little kick in the nuts, to remind
us of our responsibities, to this goodly frame the Earth.

Best Wishes,
Marwood.
That I might drink, and leave the world unseen.

Thank you Marwood, we carry a heavy burden indeed.

I'm often preoccupied by our destruction of the very thing that gives us life, and breath and food, and the fact that we, as de facto custodians of the planet are doing such an awful job of it. :?

I really love your depiction of the natural world in this--it comes alive:

Will the fish bow heads,
Grasp their fins in prayer?
Will oceans hide in streams,
And winds in empty caves?
Will rains, trembling, bury
Themselves in heavy clouds?
Will tall trees shed branches
And fall to their death in vain?

Can worms in their sodden home
Sense disaster pregnant in air?
