Beauty in dust

There is always a poetry in decay,
A sad song lowing through a ruin;
There's always a bitter sweetness
In what once was and is no more.

You can wring beauty from dust,
And from the weed-strewn cracks
Weave a melody sweet to mourn
The passing of an antique shape.

There is in the wreckage a charm,
A fragility and an assurance sure
That all our hands will to atoms
And all their efforts be in vain.

Despair not, generations unborn,
Your forefathers didn't build you
A world anew from chaos' bourne
They only picked up the baton

Their fathers handed them in line
With the precepts of the eternal
March of invention and of its art.

Who knows in future times to come
If some wistful traveller, or poet
Will muse and sigh over the wrack
Of all that the present critics deplore.

Where will flock those tourists then,
Herded to and fro like cattle penned,
In their curious sheep-eyed ignorance;
On what sad disaster take their feed?

As antiquity we gobble and we probe,
And o'er small fragments rhapsodise
May they on steel and glass detritus
Pour their intellect and their prose?

Will that great hunter, Speculation
Prowl and sniff the very streets
We now for granted take by day?
Will Conjecture breed and thrive?

In a thousand years from now
When I, and you are particled
And blown to infinitesimal dust
Will our heirs ever think of us?

Will sad poetry be written 'bout
The foundations of a high tower,
Will music be sung o'er the ruins
Of a once proud shopping mall?
