for Joan Retallack

(I was the publisher of Joan Retallack's first book! Part 1 of this poem appeared in Shennandoah 1988)

1. Sea Biscuit

The heat is what we beat.
Laughter is what we howl with.
Your business is what this is none of.

Hug me, kiss me, and scram.
The palm of my hand is what I have you in,
what you are eating out of.

The ranch is where we are back at, meanwhile.
The ground floor is what we got in on.
Tit is what we give for tat.

Ceremony is what we stand on.
Top, edge, and board are what we go over.
We take craps and give head.

We skip breakfast.
We rest on our laurels.
They roll up the sidewalk at night.

Things get better.
Things never change.
How are things?

The back is where we are stabbed.
The bone is what we work our fingers to.
Virtue is its own (whatever).

We flirt with disaster.
Time is what we arrive in the nick of.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

Broke is what we go for.
Our breath is what we catch.
Where this came from there are plenty more.

We give in to....
We get away from...
The last one home is a rotten egg.

ii. Whirlaway

Smoke is where
there is fire, and what dreams go up in.
One is what it takes to know one.

Business is what we mean.
Company is what we keep.
The store is what we mind.

Demand is what we supply.
The customer is always ripe.
Deathbeds are where we confess.

Our luck is what we curse.
We nurse drinks and split hairs.
The highest bidder is whom we are sold to.

Duty calls.
I am talking through my hat,
which is off to you.

In every port, a girl.
In every pie, a finger.
In every pot, a chicken.

We ooze charm.
We lack confidence, so we breed it.
We need to have our heads examined.

By ear is how we play it.
All hell is what breaks loose.
The bottom of the barrel is what we scrape.

Again is when we guess.
The situation is what we survey.
The lamb is what we lead to the slaughter.

The jig is up.
The die is cast.
The end is near, or words to that effect.
