Absence

I can no longer tell when
Tears end and sleep begins.
I lie awake, thinking of you
Hopelessly tearing myself,
My heart into fragments.
How many days must I
Bathe this pillow in brine?

The Atlantic is not as cold
And lonely as I feel now.

No, the Arctic wilderness
Would a verdant paradise
Seem to this waste inside.

The caves and crevices of
Lonely mountains high
A bustling city would be
To the ghost-town within.

The most distant planet
As yet to eyes unseen;
Would closer to you feel
Than this empty space,
This black-holed heart.

The fiery volcano's brim
Boils not quite as fierce'
Erupts not with so much
Fury, or blistering speed
As molten love spreads
With a pyroclastic heat.

This is my favorite.

But, when I am consumed in the fire,
Give me new Phoenix wings to fly at my desire."
