Asylum Ground

Asylum Ground

the only thing that relieves
my remembering head
is the teeming Tullan tide

atlantic cold, green, white
the cliff lips curled and soft
bleat still in my mind

I always leave there wiled and taken
knowing only a few things for certain

that your mother’s
raw dusty potatoes will stay stacked
on the cooker throughout the night

and the early robin in your garden
will wake the wet fruit trees
to get breakfast long before
the magpies

the same ones
whose jetty wings beat burgundy black
against your chilly bluebells—careless and perfect

home looks alien now.
memories ignite then burst—
they melt down to dreams
leaving a shell of revival

like the vagrant mollusk
that drowns in your emerald sand
its thin nacre skin
disappears into tiny holes
buried good in your asylum ground
"I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the heart's affections and the Truth of Imagination."

A poem of great beauty, and longing; a sigh in verse; a lament.

I love this especially

home looks alien now.
memories ignite then burst—
they melt down to dreams
leaving a shell of revival

Wonderful stuff dks.

How I've missed reading your fine verse! I may give up writing poetry altogether, just send the thought to you and let you craft it into something beautiful :D . This poem is very fine, very well-done!

But, when I am consumed in the fire,
Give me new Phoenix wings to fly at my desire."
