To a Flame

To a Flame—

it is born white
the flash-flare ignite of heat scorches air—
the match-end of chance
and atmosphere

its infant flicker
burns hottest in its cradle-strike,
a young, drop-flame—bright skin, blue blood
alone, it resembles rain

burn-switch on like a bulb
smooth, lined, curved—
glass lips, fever-filament
alight

its later hours
wave, weave, sway
one wet particle away from certain death—
glow gasps for last licks, kisses
a blaze-war of yellow, blue, red
they fight each other for sovereignty of light

then it dies—
glimmer ascends like a ghost,
warmth buried in an ash grave

the cold remains of heat interred in dust
content with a life of fire--happier to torch dead—
than oxidize to rust
"I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the heart's affections and the Truth of Imagination."
