Abandoned disgrace,
A weed-woven ruin of
Crumbling stone lies
Entombed in time's
Mouldering prison
Of forgotten beliefs.

What benighted God
Once received kindly
Hind parts, hymns
And hecatombs in
Eager hope of due
Appeasement or a
Healing of life's ills?

Which hands cast
Skyward in awe,
Which priests with
Veilèd eyes foretold
The mighty will of
The deathless ones?

Which artefact, or
Broken find can hope
To conjure forth the
Forgotten divinity
When Apollo sang
And Zeus rustled
Dodona's leaves?

"Oh what a misery it is to have an intellect in splints".
