In extremis

Far beyond the glint
Of any lighthouse, a
Solitary skiff I ride.
Waves gigantic toss
In torrid blackness.
Neverending brine
'Whelms ev'ry breath
And confusion reins
As I'm battered stiff,
Encrusted to mast.

A voyage unknown,
Destination forgot;
No navigation applies
Sailing in extremis.
No species of bird
Can guide to shore
A craft that's lost.

Whence began this?
Who can tell life
That it's not secure?
Who dares to grab
The wheel and with
Confidence plot a
Course that leads
To some purpose?

I am a mariner sans
Eyes, ears, or wit
To squint at horizons
And detect any sign
Of a fabled shore.
No mountain peaks,
Nor banks of sand
Can I compass sure
In the cabined inlets
Of this sea-stressed
Captain of a mind.
________
"Oh what a misery it is to have an intellect in splints".
