Memory of a whistle

I know I'll miss it, when he's gone:
The maddening, sometimes out-
Of-tune whistling of everything
From newscasts to solemn songs.
That, and the minutiae of things
That wind me, from the morning
Greeting's hilarious [to his mind,
And truthfully to mine] parroting
Of an old sitcom character to the
Way he always leaves a towel on
The peg in the way most annoying
For a lover of symmetry to bear.

Cherish the little annoyances that
Make a loved one them: they're
Foundations of the whole; bedrock
That will take root in your memory
Once the whole house is demolished
And grass grows thick over the very
Rubble of the whistle maker's bones.
"Oh what a misery it is to have an intellect in splints".
